As I don’t have much money st the moment and can’t afford webspace. I have decided to use tumblr. I have had a basic made so that it looks less like a blog and more like a simple web page.

Also I feel that by using tumblr it gives people the opportunity to reblog/like/follow my page therefore my work will be passed around by people and more people will see it unlike a standard website.

This is my homepage and also if you click on the images of the videos it brings you to a new page where the viewer can watch the video with a brief description.

THE DANDY BARBER

Finished Piece.

Editing

When it came to editing the documentary about Jason, we spent a massive amount of time looking through all of the footage we had collected over the previous four weeks. (almost 8 hours) We wanted to pick out what we though were the most important pieces of Jason’s story and condense this into a 10 minute piece.

Here is an example of how we want the visuals look.

We began by editing an intro, we felt that this would be just as import as Jason’s story, it was extremely important that it was rubbish as we need the viewer to find it inviting and want to watch more. After trying a couple of times using the same music from the video above and not being happy with them, we decided to go for a different song and make a more up beat introduction. This really worked and we were totally happy with it.

Week 4

This week we shot our Interview with Jason. It went really well considering it was the first interview I have ever done. With my 550D I used the  Sennheiser ME66 mic kit with the Beachtek dxa xlr and recorded straight to the footage. I figured this was just as good as recording the sound separately.

Before the interview I did quite a few tests with George to make sure we were getting the sound levels right, and making sure that we knew what we were doing when it came to shoot for real which meant we were able to get set up very quickly and get going with the interview.

It was pretty nerve racking to do as this was the main part of the whole documentary. The interview is going to run throughout the video and cut between different parts of Jasons life.

We wanted to get him framed nicely in the shot and used a little extra lighting to bring Jason out from the background. But the lighting in the shop was pretty good and was helpful in giving us the look we wanted to achieve.

Here is a brief outline of some of the interview questions. We didn’t want to use a lot of questions as we wanted to get a natural feel to the interview and have more of a conversation with Jason. But we also needed a prompt sheet incase we weren’t getting what we wanted from it.

This really helped us out and after watching it through im really happy with how it turned out. We have about 2 hours of interview to cut down into about 10 minutes. So it’s gonna be tough.

Week 3

At the start of this week we wanted to get some footage of Jason with his car, so and George met up with Jason when he finished work and he took us for a ride in his car and we got some nice shots of him driving. He owns an old rover which is really cool and very fitting with his sense of style.

On Wednesday we wen’t to Jason’s house in Christchurch, he had told us loads about his home and all the cool stuff he had. He always talks about the way he looks not being a uniform and that he really does love everything vintage. Also it was a really good opportunity for us to meet his wife and see them together at home. We were also invited to have “high-tea” which was wicked! because we’ve never had it before. And Tammy makes an incredible cup of Earl Grey.

Jason’s house is literally full of so much cool stuff. We hung out with them for a couple of hours, just talking and shooting. We set up shots and left the camera rolling a lot of the time so we wouldn’t miss good stuff.

Week 2

This week I have carried on from last week, spending quite a fair bit of time with Jason.

At the start of the week Saturday 12th March he invited us to an event called ‘Retro Revival’ at centre stage in Bournemouth.

It’s a big event for himself, his wife and friends of his. Also for a lot of people who share the same interest in the vintage “lifestyle” they have live bands, food, alcohol and burlesque dancing. It was really entertaining and Jason’s wife is part of the burlesque tropp that was performing, unfortunately she wasn’t performing which I think would have been a nice visual for the Documentary.

Filming the event was really hard, the lighting in the venue was really dark and hard to get the right amount of light for the shots we were trying to get. Also fighting with other photographers for space and trying not to get in the way of people sat down at tables watching the show.

But we carried on and tried to film as much of the event as possible. We got a lot of good stuff to use, we also got some nice footage on Jason and his wife dancing with each other on the dance floor. The problem was it was quite hard to leave long shots running due to the amount of people rushing around us and enjoying their night.

On wednesday I went in to see Jason to discuss music ideas and to just spend more time with him talking about things and learning more about what makes him tick.

He brought in some CD’s of his favorite music for me to have a sift through to find good 30′s to 50′s music to be used in the documentary.

Yesterday we spent another day in the shop filming more of Jason’s work life, we shot more of him with his clients and got a few more shot from around the shop that we hadn’t got in the previous week, it may seem a bit OTT but i really want to get as much visual as i can for this project, its my first documentary ever and I don’t want it to turn out really badly. Im quite nervous about at and im only at the second week of filming. Although I have felt my confidence rise in terms of being on location and filming him. We’re becoming more like friends.

All in all this has been a very productive week for my EMP and I’m really grateful for Jason being a part of this.
